Location

Tigh na Talisker is located in Carbost, a village on the south shore of Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye. It is in the centre of the island and therefore an ideal base to explore the many wonderful sites Skye has to offer. The house is in an elevated position off the single track road into the village.

Travel By Car

The easiest and most reliable way to get to Skye takes you across the water via the Skye bridge, at Kyle of Lochalsh. From there to the house is about 30 miles and takes about 45 minutes. If you get to Kyle from a southerly direction you have the added bonus of coming past Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most famous and most photographed beauty spots in Scotland. Alternatively you can take the ferry that serves the Isle of Sky. It is operated by CalMac and takes you from Mallaig to Armadale, a crossing that takes about half an hour. In summer there are 8 ferries a day (6 on Sunday) and you can find prices and the timetable here.  Taking the ferry would save you about an hour and a half of driving, but it is less flexible as you would need to book well in advance. Furthermore, the ferry is weather dependent and trips can be cancelled during all seasons. If you have time you could take the picturesque, community run Glenelg ferry. Be aware that in high season the ferry will be busy and you will probably have to queue. We will send detailed instructions on how to get to the house after you book your stay.

Travel By Air

Although the Isle of Skye boasts its own aerodrome the nearest commercial airport to Skye is Inverness. There are direct flights from Manchester, Birmingham, London Gatwick, Luton, Southampton, Bristol, Jersey, Dublin, Zurich, and Amsterdam. If you are a driver we would recommend hiring a car, as this would give you the greatest amount of freedom to do what you please on Skye. Furthermore, the 2½ hour drive from Inverness takes you across some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Highlands, including the shore of Loch Ness. There are various car rental companies located at Inverness Airport, Europcar, Avis and Alamo among them. To get to Skye by public transport takes a bit longer. First you need to take the 30 minute shuttle to the bus/railway station. Then you can choose between the 2 hours and 40 minute train journey to Kyle of Lochalsh, or the 2½ hour bus journey to Broadford on Skye. If you plan to arrive by train let us know and we can research options to get to Carbost from Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig. We do recommend you hire a car to make the most of your stay on Skye.
